The Underdogs were
a voluntary organisation that specialised in the Rap Culture.
Through teaching
musical skills, they helped youngsters who were not just interested in the arts as a project but also steered them
on the right path for potential careers.
The Underdogs
ran for 8 years and had approximately 700 members.
Each member had
a special part to play in the project whether it be;
RAPPING
DANCING
DESIGNING
MUSIC PRODUCTION
SINGING
The group
had many successes over the years, they performed at huge venues such as the big weekend, along side stars such as,
Danni Minogue, Peter Andre and E.Y.C for crowd of 12,000 people.
They travelled
to Germany, France and Slovakia and performed for the princess royal, Princess Anne. Prince Charles and his sons and
Her royal highness the Queen.
The dance teams won
over 400 trophies and made it to the Welsh finals every year from 1992. In 98, 2 members managed to qualify for
the UK and gained 4th place.
In 1995 the group
won the British Gas properties award winning them a grant for £5000 and an award for the Best Community Project in Britain.
The money helped towards the much-needed equipment to help the group further its aims.
The group has
a very impressive scrapbook, due to the unusual and productive successes of the group. A lot of the older members have done a great job of furthering their careers in the
Arts or youth work.
The group worked
on a seasonal basis with each term starting in September and finishing at Christmas and January through to May ready for the
Whitsun holidays. Each term had to have new stage sets, dance routines, new music and lyrics and new costumes.
To the youths
involved the project was not just another youth group it was their way of life.
